Yamaha drums have been Nick's choice since 1979, when he
had heard
Steve Jordan and Jim Keltner. Nick's set-up varies, but the main
configuration of
Recording Series drums is: 22" X 16" or 24" X 16" bass drum,
assorted brass snare
drums, including
his first pick Manu Katche 5 1/2" X 14" snare, and 12" X 8"
and 16" X 16" toms. (Other
tom choices include 13" X 9", 14" X 14", and/or
10" X 8".) Floor toms use legs.
Cymbals are Zildjian. Ride choices: 20" A. Custom Ping ride, 21"
Rock ride
or 20" K. Heavy ride, Crashes: 18" A. Thin, 18" K. Crash-Ride, 17" K.
Crash-Ride,
17" A.
Medium-Thin, and 19" Medium crash. Hi-Hats: 14" NewBeat or 13" K. top/
A. bottom.
20" Oriental Trash or
17" K. Chinas.
Sticks are Pro-Mark 747 wood tip.
Heads are Remo: coated PowerStroke 3 on the bass drum, and coated
Ambassadors on top
and clear Ambassadors on bottom of other drums. Bass drums pedals are
DW.
In his own studio, Nick uses Digital Performer 4.52 along with, among
other gear,
MOTU interfaces and quality mic pre's. More on this at the Studio
